Worldliness, Session 12: Faith and Living as Pilgrims, Jeremiah 29

091122–Sermon Notes, Session 12; Faith and Living as Pilgrims, Jeremiah 29:1-14

For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the LORD, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end. (Jeremiah 29:11; KJV)

The WCF Ministries Staff wishes you a Blessed Thanksgiving!

Four hundred years ago, in the year 1609; the founders of Plymouth Plantation celebrated the first reprieve from religious persecution in their host country of Amsterdam, Holland. While the first American Thanksgiving memorial would not be held in the new world until 1621, their joy was great as a free community of Christ. Their love and respect for their pastor, Mr. John Robinson was such that, “ It was hard to judge whether he was more delighted in having such a good people or they in having such a pastor.” 1

The history of Plymouth Plantation aptly reflects the kindness of God in using earthly loss to establish eternal gain. Cogitationes pacis et non adflictionis. When believers face the worst manner of decimation and destruction, such as Jerusalem did, enduring the destruction of their homeland and displacement into Babylon as slaves, the very trial of that hour is deliberately put upon God’s people for “peace and not for destruction.” (Jeremiah 29:11) And so it is for the people of God in every generation. (Hebrews 12:3-15) All things work together for good to them who love God. God has predestinated us to be conformed to the image of His Son. (Romans 8:28-29)

This is the practical theology of everyday life application for you and me today. The final phrase from Jeremiah 29:11 states, “To give you an expected end.” The Hebrew word, tikva means “expectation” or “hope”. The word akhareth means “latter end”, “last” or “hindermost”; which means the ultimate end of God’s purpose for our eternal happiness. It is this ultimate objective that guides God’s hand on our immediate circumstances. God expects us to respond to disaster with determined faith that looks at the ultimate end of His promises.

God’s plan for Jerusalem was to: “Build you houses, and dwell [in them]; and plant gardens, and eat the fruit of them; Take you wives, and beget sons and daughters; and take wives for your sons, and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; that you may be increased there, and not diminished. And seek the peace of the city whither I have caused you to be carried away captives, and pray unto the LORD for it: for in the peace thereof shall you have peace.” (Jeremiah 29:5-7)

Today America stands at an uncertain crossroad. Our accustomed prosperity has become a collapsing house of cards with opportunistic men and women seeking to change our entire manner of life. We do not know what the future holds, but we do know Who holds the future! The simple command for believers to occupy until Christ returns is ever more appropriate today than ever. God’s command for Jerusalem is very similar to His command to the church. We are commanded pray for the rulers of the land in which we sojourn so that we might lead godly and peaceable lives and so that Christ might be preached freely. (1 Timothy 2:1-8)

Our greatest opportunity for good flows from a determined faith being lived out in family. It seems that God’s means of stirring up our most holy faith is done most effectively by exposing the autonomous family to risks that can only be assuaged by the faith of its members. Taking wives, having children, building houses and planting gardens is the heavenly plan to raise up godly seed. Exposing yourself to risk increases your responsibility to provide. Necessity presses believers to earnest and fervent prayer. Surely the burden for many souls raises up the spirit of a man to survive. The impetus to launch Plymouth Plantation lay exclusively in the necessity that was placed upon the colonists in Holland who lived in desperate conditions of employment with undue hardships seemingly forever to be placed upon their families.

How true is the consequence also declared by the prophet: “Then shall you call upon me, and you shall go and pray unto me, and I will hearken unto you. And you shall seek me, and find [me], when you shall search for me with all your heart. I will be found of you, says the LORD. (Jeremiah 29:12ff)

The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man avails much. (James 5:16b) God has predestined us to be found in such circumstances that leave us desperately dependent upon Him. He does not satisfy a temporal end in such a fashion to diminish or prevent his ultimate end for his children. Expose yourself to God’s wonderful designs for family. Let yourself be burdened with the eternal souls of children! Be found faithful in receiving the good end by which He accomplishes through hardship and trial of faith.

With such a vision blazing inside of me, it is with great joy and anticipation that Sally and I joyfully will give away another daughter of ours into the hands of a godly man in marriage. A marriage embraced for God’s greater good which He will work upon them in the years to come. The wedding this Saturday, November 28 of our daughter Abigail Jane to Nathan Lee Brown marks the establishment of the 5th Christian home from our own progeny. Yet, this Thanksgiving also marks, the 400th anniversary of a group of English speaking Pilgrims who banded themselves together as a community of Christian families. Families walking together in Christian community in such a way that their faithfulness eventually led to the founding of our great nation.

We the staff and brethren at WCF Ministries rejoice in the community that God is establishing among us in these last days. We delight in your fellowship, pray for your good success and value your partnership. We look forward to the unfolding heritage that God has for us to share in together as we pursue that for which we have been called out to pursue. Pray for us, and share with us in the work we are called to labor.

Worldliness Session 11: Part 10, How Faith Produces Works, James 2

091115–Sermon Notes, Session 11; Part 10, How Faith Produces Works James 2:1-26

Good Works Show Faith

James 2:14-26 But do you want to know, O foolish man, that faith without works is dead? Was not Abraham our father justified by works when he offered Isaac his son on the altar? Do you see that faith was working together with his works, and by works faith was made perfect? And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God.
You see then that a man is justified by works, and not by faith only.
Likewise, was not Rahab the harlot also justified by works when she received the messengers and sent them out another way? For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.

Faith, Good Works, Fellowship

Hebrews 6:9-12 But, beloved, we are confident of better things concerning you, yes, things that accompany salvation, though we speak in this manner.
For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister.
And we desire that each one of you show the same diligence to the full assurance of hope until the end, that you do not become sluggish, but imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.

Hebrews 10:22-25 Let us draw near with a true heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled from an evil conscience, and our bodies washed with pure water. Let us hold fast the profession of [our] faith without wavering; (for he [is] faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some [is]; but exhorting [one another]: and so much the more, as you see the day approaching.

Hebrews 10:32-39 But recall the former days in which, after you were illuminated, you endured a great struggle with sufferings: partly while you were made a spectacle both by reproaches and tribulations, and partly while you became companions of those who were so treated; for you had compassion on me in my chains, and joyfully accepted the plundering of your goods, knowing that you have a better and an enduring possession for yourselves in heaven.
Therefore do not cast away your confidence, which has great reward. For you have need of endurance, so that after you have done the will of God, you may receive the promise: “For yet a little while, And He who is coming will come and will not tarry. Now the just shall live by faith; But if anyone draws back, My soul has no pleasure in him.”
But we are not of those who draw back to perdition, but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.

A Word About Faith

Hebrews 11:1-3, 6
Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.
For by it the elders obtained a good report.
Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.
But without faith [it is] impossible to please [him]: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and [that] he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

Hebrews 11:13-16
These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.
For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland. And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.

Worldliness, Session 10: Part 9, How to Be Ready for Every Good Work, Titus 3

091108–Worldliness, Session 10: Part 9, How to Be Ready for Every Good Work,Titus 3

Titus 3:5b-7 The Means is the Kindness and Love of God…
But, according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost; Which he shed on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Saviour; That being justified by his grace, we should be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Titus 3:8 Readiness is by constant affirmation…
This is a faithful saying, and these things I will that you affirm constantly, that they which have believed in God might be careful to maintain good works. These things are good and profitable unto men.

Titus 3:9-11 The Danger is Foolish Controversies…

But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain. A man that is an heretic after the first and second admonition reject; Knowing that he that is such is subverted, and sins, being condemned of himself.

Titus 3:8 Vital Ministry is based upon Good Works…

When I shall send Artemas unto thee, or Tychicus, be diligent to come unto me to Nicopolis: for I have determined there to winter. Bring Zenas the lawyer and Apollos on their journey diligently, that nothing be wanting unto them. And let ours also learn to maintain good works for necessary uses, that they be not unfruitful. All that are with me salute thee. Greet them that love us in the faith. Grace [be] with you all. Amen.

Titus 2:1 Speak things fitting of sound doctrine.

Titus 2:2 To the Aged Men…
That the aged men be sober, grave, temperate, sound in faith, in charity, in patience.

Titus 2:3-5 To the Aged Women & Young Women…
The aged women likewise, that [they be] in behavior as becomes holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things; That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, [To be] discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

Titus 2:6-8 To the Young Men…

Young men likewise exhort to be sober minded. In all things showing thyself a pattern of good works: in doctrine [showing] incorruptness, gravity, sincerity, Sound speech, that cannot be condemned; that he that is of the contrary part may be ashamed, having no evil thing to say of you.

Titus 2:9-10 To Servants…
[Exhort] servants to be obedient unto their own masters, [and] to please [them] well in all [things]; not answering again; Not purloining, but showing all good fidelity; that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Saviour in all things.

Titus 2:11-12 The Grace of God Has Appeared, Teaching…

For the grace of God that brings salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world; Looking for that Blessed Hope as a peculiar people…
Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ; Who gave himself for us, that he might redeem us from all iniquity, and purify unto himself a peculiar people, zealous of good works.

Titus 2:15 Speak, and Let no Man Despise…

These things speak, and exhort, and rebuke with all authority. Let no man despise thee.
